Top Pop Songs of All Time

Can I just insert a quick side-topic and get some feedback from you all?

What are your top POP (radio friendly) songs of all time?
Here are the first few I can think of:

New Radicals - You Get What You Give (oh, if only it were sans rap!)

Radiohead - No Surprises

Oasis - Champagne Supernova

CCR - basically anything they put out, but especially "Have you ever seen the rain?"

Hall & Oats - Kiss on My List*

The Animals - House of the Rising Sun

Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side

Velvet Underground - Stephanie Says (not sure this actually fits in pop songs)

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust

Rolling Stones - You Can't Always Get What You Want

Rolling Stones - Wild Horses

Tom Petty - Free Fallin'

(note: * denotes "siiiiike")

  1. This should be an exercise we all participate in...after the Top 25 countdown, that is.

Major kudos for "House of the Rising Sun."

  2. Don't go siiiikin' my boys. 'Kiss on my list' is great - not as good as 'Rich Girl,' tho'. But here's an off the cuff attempt at Top 6 poppers, 90s edition (in order):

    1. Hanson-MMMBop
    2. Fugees-Killing Me Softly
    3. Natalie Imbroglio-Torn
    4. Backstreet/'NSYNC-I Want It That Way
    5. Backstreet/"NSYNC-It's Gonna Be Me
    6. STP-Interstate Love Song

None of these are 'guilty' pleasures. I forget which boy band did which song.

  3. Oh, this is fun. 90s, 7-11:

    7. Depeche Mode-Enjoy the Silence
    8. Foo Fighters-Everlong
    9. Geto Boys-Mind Playing Tricks
    10. Oasis-Wonderwall
    11. Michael Penn-No Myth

Who knows, they might not be in order anymore.

  8. I remember finding a bargain-priced used copy of Hanson less than a year after it came out in a crowded Cutler's Compact Discs in New Haven. I carried it up to the checkout smuggled between two other cd's like it was a porno. When I reached the register, though, the guy called out to a fellow employee in the back of the store, "hey, this guy's buying Hanson!!"

3 more stupid-awesome pop tracks, this time from the 80s:

    Squeeze-Pulling Mussels (from a shell)
    Erasure-A Little Respect
Bon Jovi-Born to Be My Baby

The latter is Bon Jovi's best song. End of argument.
